  • SAMeLQ® is a supplement for dogs and cats that supports normal liver function. It contains ingredients like S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAMe), licorice root extract, quercetin, L-taurine, B-vitamins, and other antioxidants.

  • Sarolaner is given by mouth and is used to treat flea and tick infestations and has also been used off-label to treat certain types of mange and mites. Give as directed. Side effects are uncommon but may include stomach upset or neurologic symptoms. Do not use in pets with a history of seizures. If a negative reaction occurs, please call the veterinary office.

  • Seasonal flank alopecia is a skin condition in which affected dogs lose patches of hair seasonally, likely due to an abnormal response of the hair follicles to normal hormonal changes that occur with changing day length. This condition is purely cosmetic, so no treatment is necessary. Melatonin can be used to speed hair regrowth and prevent hair loss in dogs that develop this condition on a recurrent basis.

  • Seboliance (brand name Douxo®S3 SEB) is a natural extract from the pomegranate plant (Punica granatum) used to help control dandruff, reduce odor, and help hydrate dry skin in cats and dogs. Seboliance may be part of a combination product containing ophytrium. Seboliance comes in mousse and shampoo forms.

  • Seizures and syncope are commonly confused with one another due to similarities in the appearance of these episodes. Both present with collapse but there are several details, explained in this handout, that can differentiate between them, which is important for determining treatment. The prognosis for each condition varies depending on the underlying causes.

  • Canine agility training provides exercise and mental stimulation for both handler and dog. Older agility dogs also benefit from strengthening the bond with their owners, socializing with other dogs, and fulfilling natural hunting instincts. A physical exam and veterinary consultation before starting a new exercise regimen is advised.

  • Serotonin is a neurotransmitter produced by the body that regulates mood, sleep, body temperature, pain perception, blood vessel constriction, gastrointestinal function, and even blood clotting. An animal with serotonin syndrome experiences excessive effects of serotonin. This handout reviews the causes, diagnosis and treatment.

  • Sertraline is given by mouth and is an antidepressant used off label in dogs and cats to treat a variety of behavior disorders, including anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and aggression.

  • Ophthalmic autologous serum is a blood-derived product used to treat corneal ulcers in animals. Ophthalmic autologous serum is part of the blood and is collected directly from the patient. It is in liquid form.

  • Shaker syndrome is a condition involving generalized head and body tremors in dogs. The condition is often seen in small-breed, white dogs, although dogs of any size and color may be affected. The cause is unknown but thought to be autoimmune due to its response to treatment with steroids.
